Worldwide guide to the work of Belgian artist Steve Michiels: in Dutch, French and English
mainly fills his days with drawing. This is the best way for him to reflect and communicate. Through drawing, he gives form to his thoughts and makes the reader laugh. Humor is essential to his work. His drawings have a strong communicative aspect because humor can only exist in an environment of mutual understanding, he writes in his notebook. On January 31st 2009, the cartoonist wrote:
“I always wanted to be a comic book artist, even as a child. My world view was formed by Spike and Suzy and the Tin Tin weekly. While studying art I came in contact with other art forms. But my drawings remained ineradicably influenced by the visual language of comic strips(…) My body of work now consists mainly of cartoons and illustrations where the stories take place in one picture. The ultimate meaning of the work lies somewhere in between the drawn image and the written word.”
